What Happens Before the Foundation Is Poured?

Foundation work is underway on two Remington Rebuilds homes in Altadena, marking an exciting step as these rebuilds move from early planning and site preparation into visible construction.
While this stage may look like digging, there is much more happening behind the scenes. Before a foundation can be formed and poured, the site needs to be prepared carefully so the home can be built on properly reviewed, compacted, and tested soil.

Preparing for the Foundation
On this project, the first step is excavation in preparation for the footings, which are the lower part of the foundation system.
In some areas, this includes what is called over-excavation. This means excavating down to suitable, undisturbed soil based on the recommendations of the soil engineer and the requirements of local code.
Once the excavation reaches the proper depth and soil conditions, the area is backfilled in lifts, or levels. Each lift is compacted, and compaction testing is completed to confirm the soil meets the required criteria before work continues.
This step matters because the foundation depends on the stability and preparation of the soil beneath it.

What Comes Next
After excavation, backfill, compaction, and testing are complete, the next step is trenching for the footings.
From there, the foundation process continues with forming, inspection, and concrete placement for the footings and stem walls.
Each step builds on the one before it, helping create a solid foundation for the home to come.
We’ll continue sharing progress from the field as these Altadena rebuilds take shape.
